Promoting Minority Language Use to Foster Revitalisation: Insights From New Speakers of West Frisian

Abstract Language planners are increasingly aware of the importance new speakers (individuals acquiring a language outside home, typically later-on in life) for revitalisation minority languages. Yet, little is known about speakers’ activation (the process by which they become active and habitual users). This article presents questionnaire-based investigation (n = 264) use West Frisian Fryslân, Netherlands—and role traditional play activation. Qualitative quantitative data show that participants only rarely; when do it, it mainly classroom. Minority interactions classroom, with speakers, consist mostly few tokenistic words or phrases. The findings to what extent different behaviours discourage and/or encourage use, highlighting how complex dynamics between speaker groups hindering efforts. discusses implications these planning promote thereby Frisian.
